Vela Rika is a stream that flows for most of the year. This easy 8.5 km walk (360 m of climbing, KRK HIKE 162) follows it in oak shade from the Žanac spring (roadside drinking water by the D102 at Draga Bašćanska), past two small waterfalls and the Portafortuna cliffs, over Treskavac pass towards its source and back. It is best after rain: in high summer the bed can dry out, which is why it is also called 'Suha Ričina' (dry river).
Our tips
Fill your bottles at the Žanac spring: drinking from it is locally called 'kissing the baba', after the rock the water flows from.
Go in spring or autumn, when the water flows; in August the bed can be dry.
The Vela Rika spring paths are a hunting area: wear bright colours outside summer.
