The island by theme
Village guides
- Baška mountains: The island's big walking country: a bare 'moon' plateau of sheep walls above Baška and the island's highest summit, best walked at dawn and dangerous at noon in July.
- Baška south-east coves: No road, just bare hills, sheep and pebble coves: ten minutes by taxi boat from Baška harbour, or a hot, beautiful hike.
- Baška valley: The road down to Baška is a museum without walls: a giant stone letter, the church of the Baška Tablet, 237 pilgrim steps and flower-shaped sheep pens.
- Baška: Krk's long-beach town under bare mountains: swim early, walk up to St John's for the evening light, eat one street back from the promenade.
- Dobrinj: A car-free hilltop village of stone curiosities and small museums, with a quiet interior around it: a ghost village, a giant stone mound and churches named in a charter of 1100.
- Kornić: A quiet inland village and, below it at the head of the bay, a small domed early church, a warm family beach and a wakeboard cable.
- Krk Town: The island capital: Roman and Venetian walls, a castle and cathedral side by side, and a harbour that is best early in the morning and after dark.
- Malinska: The sheltered west-coast harbour town: a pine-shaded shore path past a ruined 1970s resort, a friary hamlet at Porat, and the Vila Rova tasting menu.
- Njivice: A small west-facing harbour village with a Michelin-selected seafront restaurant, the north end of the Paradise Path and a bird lake in the oak woods behind.
- Omišalj: A clifftop Glagolitic old town above a Roman town on the shore, and a quiet bay under the Krk bridge: an easy stop on arrival or departure day.
- Poljica: Krk's shaded inland west: a 400-year-old oak, stone-stepped village ponds, a 12th-century trefoil chapel in the woods and peka konobas worth ordering a day ahead.
- Punat: An olive-growing sailors' town on a sheltered lagoon, with a Franciscan island monastery ten minutes across the water.
- Rudine: A small, lit show cave at 15 °C above the island's north-east tip, with a 30-minute trail down to Slivanjska cove.
- Šilo: An easy-going harbour resort opposite Crikvenica, with a sand beach, an old tuna lookout on the point and a fast boat to the mainland.
- Soline bay: A shallow, warm, almost enclosed bay of three villages, known for its black mud, sandy shallows and simple seafood on the water.
- Stara Baška: A tiny shepherds' village at the end of the road: a harbour, steep lanes up to the church and the hilltop cemetery, and coves on every side.
- The south-west coast: Krk's wild swimming coast: turquoise coves under bare karst, some reached by a rocky path, some only by boat.
- The Vrbnik field: Žlahtina vineyards, three quiet stone hamlets and a slow sea road of empty coves that ends at Risika's sandy bay.
- Vrbnik: A clifftop wine village of stone lanes, cellar doors and a small working harbour, best early in the morning and after the day-trippers leave.
- The wild west coast: Krk's quiet, forested western shore facing Cres: a friary harbour at the island's head, snorkelling coves through the oak scrub, a lavender farm and a pine-shaded family bay with a sunset grill.
Day trips
- Cres: A wild, empty island 25 minutes away by ferry: vultures and a Roman bridge for families, a clifftop village and a hard beach walk for couples.
- Crikvenica by boat from Šilo: An easy half day from Vrbnik: a 10-minute boat ride to a promenade lunch with a view of Krk.
- Gorski kotar: The July heat escape: two caves at about 8 °C, mountain lakes and a game lunch, about 70 minutes from Vrbnik.
- Istria's hill towns: A long autumn food day: a truffle hunt with dogs, lunch in Motovun, walls with a view.
- Lošinj: Too far for a day from Krk. Worth one night for the dolphins and a starred dinner.
- Opatija: A long fish lunch on Volosko harbour, then the Austro-Hungarian promenade into Opatija.
- Plitvice Lakes: Famous, but not a day trip from Krk in summer: over six hours of driving for a crowded boardwalk.
- Postojna Cave: Not a day trip: a stop on the drive in or out, right on the route from Ljubljana.
- Rab via Lopar: The sand-beach day for small children, and the one ferry you can book.
- Rijeka: A grey-day half day: the fish hall in the morning, lunch by the market, and the 561 steps to Trsat.
- Učka Nature Park: The mountain above Opatija: a shaded walk to a 1911 stone tower with the whole Kvarner below.
Good to know
Krk bridge: avoid the summer weekend queues
On summer weekends the queue at the Krk bridge can stretch for kilometres on both sides, sometimes back onto the motorway past Hreljin.
With a Saturday changeover, cross early in the morning, and avoid Friday and Saturday afternoons coming in and Sunday evening going out.
Scooter and bike route: the quiet eastern road via Čižići and Soline to Vrbnik
The eastern road through Čižići and Soline to Vrbnik is the quiet choice for scooters and e-bikes: better views and far less traffic. Scenic stretches: from the bridge to Čižići, the descent to Baška, and the descent to Punat when coming from Baška.
Off-season without a car is hard: few buses, little scooter or bike hire
Off-season, buses run only a few times a day and scooter and bike hire is hard to find.
Off-season guests need a car or a pre-booked transfer.
Valbiska ferry: paid car park by the ticket kiosk
Foot passengers can leave the car in the lot just before the ticket kiosk at Valbiska; it is paid by the day.
Snorkelling: clear water, few species
The water is crystal clear but the marine life is modest: saddled bream everywhere and a few rock fish, nothing tropical. Seagrass and rocky coves beat the busy town beaches.
Come for the clarity, not the fish. Keen snorkellers do best in the coves past Bunculuka or below Oprna.
Hard-to-reach coves fill with boats in summer
From June to August most of the pretty, hard-to-reach coves are crowded with anchored boats.
For solitude on foot, go early in the morning, or in May or September.
Jellyfish: they come and go with the currents
Jellyfish have no fixed spots on Krk: they drift in with the currents.
Sightings are uncommon and vary from year to year.
Carry cash for beaches and small bars
Beach kiosks and lounger attendants at Oprna take cash only.
Carry cash for loungers, kiosks and parking attendants.
Bura and jugo, the two big winds
The bura is a cold, dry, gusty north-easterly, most common in the colder months, and it reaches far out to sea. The jugo is a steady, warm, moist south-easterly. On Krk the bura prevails in the centre and north; Malinska and Dubašnica on the west coast lie sheltered from strong winds. Strong wind can stop ferries and close the bridge to some vehicles.
On a windy day, read the marine forecast at meteo.hr before you take a boat out. In big waves, swim close to the shore and take care on rocky beaches.
The Krk bridge in strong wind
Hrvatske autoceste runs the bridge and closes it in stages as the wind rises. First: motorcycles, caravans, cars towing a trailer, vans over 1.9 m and double-deck buses (average wind 60 km/h or gusts over 90 km/h, dry road). Delivery vans and lower vans follow at 90 km/h, all vehicles at 110 km/h; the limits are lower on a wet road. On ice it closes to all.
Before you set off, check the line 'DC102 most Krk' in the road report at hak.hr, or call 072 777 777. Signs at both ends of the bridge show any ban.
Ferries to Cres and Rab from Valbiska
Jadrolinija runs both lines from Valbiska. To Merag on Cres: 25 minutes, 13 sailings a day 3 Jul–30 Sep 2026, up to 12 the rest of the year, and the ticket is valid on any sailing that day. To Lopar on Rab: 80 minutes, 4 sailings a day 29 May–27 Sep 2026, 2 otherwise, and the ticket books a set sailing.
Buy at jadrolinija.hr or in the mJadrolinija app, no printout needed; each line's page has the timetable. For Cres in summer, arrive 30–40 minutes early on weekdays and at least an hour early at weekends. Wind stops sailings: check hak.hr first.
Emergency numbers, doctors and hospital
Call 112 for any emergency, free from any phone; the direct lines are 194 ambulance, 192 police, 193 fire and 195 sea rescue. The emergency medical service in Krk Town, on Vinogradska street, works 24 hours. The hospital is KBC Rijeka, with emergency departments at Krešimirova 42 and in Sušak. In summer 2026, tourist clinics ran daily in Krk Town and Baška.
Carry your EHIC: at public clinics it gets you care on the same terms as locals. The Krk Town tourist clinic in 2026: Ulica Josipa Pupačića 1, daily from 1 June, 09:00–21:00 from 21 June.
Pharmacies and the night pharmacy
Krk Town, Malinska, Njivice, Omišalj, Punat, Vrbnik, Baška and Šilo have pharmacies, each with its own opening hours. None of them is on the official night-duty list. The night-duty pharmacy for the county is Ljekarna Centar, Riva 18, Rijeka, open 20:00–07:00 every night of the year.
Need medicine at night? Call Ljekarna Centar on 051 213 101 before you drive to Rijeka. For anything urgent, call 194.
Sea urchin spines and the midday sun
Stepping on a sea urchin leaves a painful puncture, and the spines often break off in the skin. Remove visible spines straight away and gently, as they snap easily; vinegar soaks dissolve shallow ones and hot water often eases the pain. The sun is strongest 11:00–15:00, and a beach umbrella stops only 40–50% of UV.
See a doctor if a spine sits deep or the pain lasts beyond 5–7 days. On the beach, use SPF 30 or higher, a hat and sunglasses, and keep children in the shade at midday.
