The best beach on Krk Island is Zala Beach near Stara Baška — wild, car-free, and reachable only by boat or a 45-minute hike. But the right beach for you depends entirely on what you're looking for. After more than ten summers on this island, I've ranked every beach worth visiting — with honest notes on crowds, access, and which months to go.
The 6 Best Beaches on Krk Island
-
1
Zala Beach — Stara Baška
The most remote and most beautiful beach on Krk. No road access. You get there by boat (10 minutes from Stara Baška) or on foot along a marked trail (45 minutes). The reward: a wild pebble cove with incredibly clear water, a tiny beach bar, and, in May or September, almost nobody else there. In July and August it fills up — still far less crowded than any main beach. Best for: couples, adventurers, morning boat trips from Villa Marim.
-
2
Oprna Bay — Stara Baška
A sheltered bay 2km from Stara Baška with turquoise water that genuinely earns that description. Accessible by boat or a short drive followed by a 15-minute walk. The small beach bar is open in season. The water is shallow and calm — good for children. Best for: families, a long afternoon, boat trips from Villa Marim.
-
3
Vrbnik Secret Beach — Vrbnik
Eight minutes' walk from Villa Moana and Villa Manatis. Small, pebble, no facilities. Mostly locals and villa guests — it doesn't appear on tourist maps. The water here is exceptionally clean because Vrbnik has no marina. You go down a steep path from the village edge. Best for: guests at Villa Moana or Manatis who want a swim without driving.
-
4
Potovosce Beach — near Vrbnik
A family-friendly pebble beach about 4km from Vrbnik. Calm, shallow entry, clear water. The car park is small so arrive before 10am in summer. Best for: families with young children, those who want easy access without a boat.
-
5
Baška Beach — Baška town
The main beach. 1.8km of sand and fine pebble — one of the longest beaches in Croatia. Beautiful in late April, May, or September when it isn't packed. In July and August: busiest beach on the island by far, sun loungers stacked edge to edge. Worth visiting for the setting alone. The old town of Baška at one end is genuinely charming. Best for: shoulder season visits, a day trip from our villas (40-minute drive).
-
6
Beli Beach — northern Krk
Wild, pebble, within the Beli Nature Reserve on the northern tip of the island. Protected area — no development, no bars, no sun loungers. The griffon vulture colony at Beli village (5-minute walk from the beach) is one of the few remaining colonies in the Adriatic. Best for: nature lovers, a full-day drive around the island, anyone who wants a beach that feels completely undiscovered.
When to Go
The sea temperature on Krk reaches 24°C in August and stays above 22°C through September. For beaches without crowds: May, June, and September are the right answer. May in particular is extraordinary — 20°C air, wildflowers on the hillsides, almost no other tourists. Zala and Oprna Bay in May feel like private property.
July and August: the water is perfect, but every beach with road access will be full by 10am. If you visit in peak season, go early — before 9am — or take a boat to Zala, which stays manageable even in high season.
What to Bring
All Krk beaches except Baška are pebble or rock. Water shoes make a significant difference, especially for children. The water is clear enough to snorkel anywhere on the island — we include snorkelling gear in the welcome kit at Villa Marim.
Getting to the Beaches from Our Villas
From Villa Moana and Villa Manatis in Vrbnik: the secret beach is an 8-minute walk. Potovosce is a 5-minute drive. Baška is 40 minutes by car.
From Villa Marim in Stara Baška: Oprna Bay is a 15-minute boat trip or 20-minute walk. Zala Beach is 10 minutes by boat. The private rock terrace at Villa Marim itself gives you direct Adriatic access — stone steps lead down to a small natural cove below the villa.
"The pool is long and beautiful but it was the setting that got us — ancient olive trees surrounding it, complete silence except for the birds." — Lorenzo & Giulia, guests at Villa Moana
