Sailing and Boat Trips from Krk: What We Recommend to Our Guests

· By Benjamin Haller · 10 min read

Krk sits at the centre of Kvarner Bay — one of the most protected and navigable areas of the Adriatic. Cres is 45 minutes by boat. Lošinj is a short sail further. The uninhabited islets south of Stara Baška can be reached in 10 minutes and will, before 8am, be entirely yours.

From Stara Baška — Villa Marim's Doorstep

The Stara Baška harbour is 2 minutes from Villa Marim on foot. This is one of the most quietly exceptional things about the villa's position: you do not need to drive to a marina, organise a shuttle, or plan around ferry timetables. You walk down, you get in a boat, you go.

Self-drive speedboats are available for rent from the local operator at the harbour — no captain's licence required for smaller vessels under 15HP (verify current Croatian regulations on arrival, as requirements may change by season). A day boat costs approximately €80–150/day depending on size, type, and season — prices vary by operator and change yearly, so confirm directly at the harbour. Ask at the harbour on arrival and they will brief you on the navigation, the anchorages, and the current conditions.

Day Trip: Zala Beach

Ten minutes south by boat from Stara Baška. No road access — only boat or a 45-minute hike from the Stara Baška trail. Bring your own supplies (the beach bar closes in early season and operates limited hours). The water at Zala is among the clearest in Kvarner Bay — turquoise over white limestone pebbles in a way that photographs cannot fully render.

Go before 9am for complete solitude. By 11am in July and August there will be other boats. Before 9am in May or September you may not see another person.

Day Trip: Oprna Bay

Fifteen minutes from Stara Baška by boat. A sheltered cove enclosed by limestone cliffs, with a small beach bar that operates from late May through September. Good for families — the water is calm, shallow near the entry, and protected from wind by the cliff walls. The limestone turns amber at sunset. Drop anchor, swim, eat, sleep in the sun. This is what an afternoon in the Adriatic should be.

Oprna Bay, Stara Baška — 15 minutes by boat, one of the most beautiful coves on Krk
Oprna Bay — 15 minutes from the Villa Marim harbour by boat. Bring lunch and stay the afternoon.

Day Trip to Cres Island

Forty-five minutes by boat from Stara Baška across the Kvarner channel. Cres is Croatia's second-largest island at approximately 405 km² — just behind Krk (406 km²) — but has only 3,000 permanent inhabitants. It is largely wild. Two stops worth making:

Cres Town: Medieval walls, a Venetian loggia, narrow streets quieter than any town on Krk in summer. The harbour at Cres Town has good lunch restaurants and the kind of atmosphere that comes from a place that has not been optimised for tourism.

Beli: A village on the northern cliff of Cres with a resident colony of griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus). The Eco Centre Caput Insulae in Beli runs visits to the observation areas; the griffon vulture is one of Europe's largest birds, with a wingspan of up to 2.6 metres. An extraordinary sight on an afternoon when you have the right wind and patience.

Cres Island coastline from the Kvarner Bay — wildest island in the Croatian Adriatic
Cres Island from the water — 3,000 permanent inhabitants, approximately 405 km², and almost entirely wild.

Day Trip to Lošinj

Further south — 2–3 hours by boat from Stara Baška, or take the ferry from Valbiska on western Krk and drive. Mali Lošinj is a genuine Mediterranean town: palm-lined harbour, terracotta rooftops, excellent restaurants, the kind of waterfront that makes you understand why the Adriatic has always drawn people south.

The Adriatic Dolphin Project has tracked a resident pod of bottlenose dolphins in the Cres-Lošinj area since 1987. Encounters are common on the passage south, particularly in the morning when the sea is calm. We send guests with boat experience on this route regularly; they almost always report a sighting.

Skippered Charters

For full-day or multi-day sailing, we can arrange a skippered charter boat from Malinska harbour on the north coast of Krk. A typical day charter runs approximately €400–600 for up to 10 passengers, including the captain and fuel — actual pricing depends on boat type, size, and services; contact us for a current quote. Multi-day itinerary: Krk → Cres → Lošinj → Rab, with anchorage at quiet bays overnight. This is the format we recommend for guests who want the Adriatic experience without navigating it themselves.

Contact us when you book and we will coordinate the charter, the itinerary, and the timing to fit around your villa stay.

"The islets south of Stara Baška at sunrise. You will have them entirely to yourselves before 8am. I promise."

We know these waters. The islets south of Stara Baška at sunrise are one of the best things Krk offers — and most guests discover them because we told them to go before 8am.
