Exploring Krk by Vespa: The Routes We Ride Every Summer

· By Benjamin Haller · 8 min read

Villa Moana includes a Vespa scooter for guests — no rental fee, helmets included. It is the single amenity guests mention most when they return. Here are the three routes we give every guest who arrives.

Why a Vespa on Krk

The island's best places are not reachable by car. Narrow cliff roads, unmarked tracks to coves, a winding descent into Vrbnik at 6am with nobody else on the road. A Vespa makes Krk a completely different island. Maximum speed is approximately 45 km/h — more than enough. When you are on a cliff road above the Kvarner Bay with the sea 200 metres below you, slower is always better anyway.

The freedom it gives is real. You are not committed to a car park. You are not waiting for a tour bus. You find a track leading off the road, you follow it, and sometimes it ends at a cove that isn't on any map. This happens more often than you would expect on Krk.

Practical Information

A valid EU driving licence (or international equivalent) is required. Category A1 or B with motorcycle endorsement, or an AM licence — EU licences are accepted. Non-EU guests should carry an international driving permit alongside their home licence. Two people can ride together; two helmets are provided.

The Vespa is kept in the covered garage at Villa Moana. We brief every guest on the route map on arrival — including road conditions, the best time of day for each route, and where to be cautious. Fuel: there is no petrol station in Vrbnik — we provide a full tank on arrival. The nearest station is in Krk Town, approximately 20 minutes by road, so fill up there if you plan a long day of riding.

Route 1 — Vrbnik Wine Loop (30 minutes)

Villa Moana → cliff road out of Vrbnik → viewpoint above the Kvarner channel → old town of Vrbnik (park at the top, walk Klančić) → return via the lower road.

Best at sunrise. You will pass zero cars. The cliff road climbs out of Vrbnik to the north and within four minutes you are on a limestone ridge with the sea on both sides — Kvarner to the east, the island's interior to the west. The viewpoint above the channel is unmarked but unmissable: a natural stone platform where you stop, cut the engine, and listen to nothing. Then ride down into the old town for coffee before anyone else is awake.

Route 2 — North Coast (1.5 hours)

Vrbnik → Šilo → coastal road north → Njivice → Omišalj (Roman ruins, panoramic view of the mainland) → return via the inland road through island forest.

This is the route that shows you the full range of Krk in a single morning. You begin in the wine valley, climb to the coast at Šilo where the road runs directly above the sea, continue north through the quiet resort of Njivice, and arrive at Omišalj — a hilltop town with Roman foundations and views directly across to the mainland. On a clear day you can see the peaks of the Velebit mountains. The return through the island's interior forest is a different kind of quiet: dense oak and pine, no sea visible, a road that winds between old stone walls.

Route 3 — Krk Town and Punat (45 minutes)

Vrbnik → Malinska → Krk Town (park near the walls, explore on foot) → Punat (optional: small boat to Košljun Franciscan monastery island) → return.

Best as a half-day: morning Vespa ride, park outside the old walls of Krk Town, spend two hours on foot inside the Roman town — the cathedral, the Frankopan castle, the narrow streets. Then ride 10 minutes south to Punat, where small boats leave for Košljun island, home to a Franciscan monastery with a library of Glagolitic manuscripts. Back in time for a late lunch on the terrace at Villa Moana.

What Guests Say

The Vespa is, reliably, the amenity that guests mention first when they return. It changes how the week feels — less resort, more adventure.

"The Vespa was the best surprise. We spent every morning on the coastal road — finding coves that aren't on any map."

— Sarah & Tom, guests at Villa Moana

We hear this version of that story almost every week in summer. The coves are real. The empty roads are real. This is what Krk looks like when you are not following a tour bus.
