Day trip · The Krk Map
Not a day trip: a stop on the drive in or out, right on the route from Ljubljana.

Postojna is big and commercial, one of Europe's largest show caves, but the underground train makes it easy with children, and it sits almost exactly on the fastest road from Ljubljana to Krk. As a stop it costs about ten minutes of extra driving plus the visit. As a day trip it costs four and a half hours in the car. Couples who prefer drama to trains should choose Škocjan instead.
When to come: All year, all weathers
For guests driving from Austria or Germany via Ljubljana, the fastest route to Vrbnik already leaves the A1 motorway at Postojna and follows road 6 via Ilirska Bistrica to the Croatian border. Stopping at the cave adds only about 10 minutes of driving.
One of Europe's largest show caves: 3.5 km by train and 1.5 km guided on foot, about 90 minutes, at about 10 °C.
Tip: Bring a jacket for everyone, even in August.
A castle set into a cliff face, about 9 km from the cave.
Tip: If you arrive from the north in the morning, do the castle first, then the cave, then drive on to Krk.
A UNESCO-listed cave walked entirely on foot, with no train; 12 °C.
Tip: Choose Škocjan for couples who want drama and fewer crowds; Postojna for children (the train).
Carry ID or a passport. Slovenia ended its temporary checks at the Croatian border in June 2026, but police can still stop cars for spot checks.
