Day trip · The Krk Map
A grey-day half day: the fish hall in the morning, lunch by the market, and the 561 steps to Trsat.

Rijeka is a working port city, not a resort, and that is its appeal on the right day: a Secession fish hall full of Kvarner catch, a coffee on the Korzo, a Baroque sugar palace turned museum, and a castle above it all. It's close, it's real, and it's a good answer on a grey day.
When to come: All year; mornings. Rijeka Carnival in late winter for off-season guests.
Rijeka's market halls: the 1914–1916 fish hall by Carlo Pergoli, decorated with stone crabs, octopus and fish, beside the older steel-and-glass pavilions from 1880.
Tip: A big hall of Kvarner fish; if you buy for dinner, bring a cool bag for the drive back.
Bistro Mornar on Riva Boduli or Konoba Na Kantunu on Wenzelova, by the Rječina, both a few minutes from the fish hall.
Tip: Come early or book: Mornar fills up at lunchtime.
The Petar Kružić staircase (begun 1531) climbs from Titov trg to Trsat's castle and pilgrimage church on the 138 m hill. The castle has a café in its Elliptical Tower.
Tip: Walk up, then take bus 2 or a taxi down (or the other way round with children).
The late-Baroque headquarters of Rijeka's 18th-century sugar refinery, with painted walls and reliefs, now the city museum (opened late 2020).
Tip: The rainy-day anchor of the half day.
Info point and paid entry Mon–Sat 09:00–17:00; after 17:00 and on Sundays entry is free. The café stays open later.
